ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to compare and contrast the variety of ways that spatial expressions are encoded in six Tibeto-Burman languages. The study is “comprehensive” in the sense that it is not confined to a single grammatical domain or “subsystem” (e.g., verb agreement, demonstratives, serial verbs), but instead explores the variety of word classes, morphological markings, and constructions through which spatial concepts are expressed. This approach allows us to profile the centrality of spatial expression in these languages, as well as the richness, subtlety, and complexity of spatial information conveyed grammatically. This includes notions such as geomorphic and topographical deixis, direction, and metaphorical and cultural extensions. The comparison also highlights the diversity of the systems of expressions in the spatial domain, such as differences in the size and complexity of spatial subsystems, and the combinatorial possibilities that particular subsystems generate.
